The history of Breitling watches
The brand has been in existence since 1884, but not as a watchmaker. After the factory's creation by founder Léon Breitling, various watch parts were produced such as chronometers, stopwatches and measuring instruments for other watchmakers.
Some years later in 1899, Breitling thought of making a wrist-worn stopwatch. This turned out to be a highly welcome addition to any pilot’s arsenal, which greatly contributed to the watch’s success. The friendly relations that the company sustained with the aviation industry have been vital in Breitling’s success ever since.
Sadly, Léon Breitling could not very much enjoy this success. After he passed in 1914 his son took over the factory and invented a watch with both a stopwatch and a dial. Being the first to create a watch with both of these qualities, which were widely regarded as being incredibly useful, this innovation opened the floodgates to Breitling’s lasting commercial success.
